The Ear Research Foundation (ERF) established one of the first Clinical Fellowships
in the field of Otolaryngology in the United States. The Fellowship is in its
fourteenth successful year and is a one-year program for board eligible Otolaryngologists.
The post-graduate Fellows gain specialized training and cutting edge experience
in the field of Otolaryngology.
The ERF Fellowship is a very active program with a great deal of "hands-on"
training. Under the auspices of Dr. Herbert Silverstein and Dr. Seth Rosenberg,
each Fellow treats private patients in the Florida Ear and Sinus Center and
indigent patients referred by the Ear Research Foundation. They will also assist
in surgeries. Fellows take emergency room call on a rotating basis with other
ENT physicians in Sarasota, and for Dr. Silverstein. Each Fellow also conducts
research and documentation for several research papers during their tenure.
Fellows have access through the ERF to a complete microsurgical laboratory,
and an audiovisual and scientific library for ear physicians and surgeons.
To make application to the ERF Fellowship Program, candidates must complete
and return:
- a completed application
- a complete copy of your Curriculum Vitae
- any reprints of your published material
- three letters of recommendation (one must be from your Chief)
- a passport size photograph.
- send all of this information to the Ear Research Foundation, 1901 Floyd
Street, Sarasota, FL 34239, Attention Dr. Herbert Silverstein
Upon receipt of the completed application and review, candidates may be notified
for an interview in Sarasota. These usually take place on Monday and Tuesday,
and candidates should plan to spend at least one day on site.
The fellowship is usually awarded a minimum of one year in advance, which allows
time to obtain the necessary certifications. A Florida medical license must
be obtained and applications for surgical privileges must be made immediately
to: Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital, Cape Surgery Center, and Venice
Bon Secours Hospital (consulting privileges only). In addition, the fellow must
obtain certification to use the various lasers for surgery. The appointed fellow
must also sign a restrictive covenant.
If it is not possible for you to obtain the above-mentioned licensure, the
Foundation does arrange unsalaried research fellowships. If this is the case,
please note your request to do so in your cover letter.
